Police responded to a report of two Baton Rouge Police Officers being shot on Sunday, April 26th between 12:30 and 1:00PM.
The incident occurred at 3155 Conrad Ave. near North Foster Drive. A spokesman with the BRPD confirmed that two officers had been struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital. Witnesses reported seeing two ambulances leaving the scene being escorted by multiple police units.
Police say the suspect in the shootings, Ronnie Kato, barricaded himself inside a home at the location and was refusing to come out. SWAT units were seen surrounding the home and appeared to be communicating with Kato using a bullhorn.
A source said that Baton Rouge Police were looking for Kato after learning that he was involved in another shooting earlier Sunday which occurred at 1828 N. Pamela Dr. That incident, which was a domestic violence incident, left a member of the shooter’s family, Curtis Richardson, 58, dead.
Baton Rouge Police Chief Murphy Paul said the deceased officer was Lt. Glenn Hutto, and the injured officer is Cpl. Derrick Maglone.
Kato, 36, was arrested without incident after an approximate four-hour standoff, said Paul.
EBR Mayor Sharon Weston Broome arrived on the scene shortly after the incident unfolded.
