Gordon “Trey” Bargas, lifelong Baton Rouge resident and a retiree from the Baton Rouge City Police, announced his candidacy for the East Baton Rouge Parish Metro Council District 11 seat abruptly Tuesday afternoon on his Facebook page.
Bargas stated, “The latest event with BRPD confirmed to me that we, as a community, need leadership that supports law enforcement.“
The latest event he was referring to was the shooting death of Lt. Glenn Hutto Jr. and the shooting of Corporal Derrick Maglone, both of the Baton Rouge City Police on Sunday, April 26th. The alleged shooter was wanted for shooting and killing his mother’s boyfriend earlier in the day. Maglone and Hutto arrived at the shooter’s location on Conrad St. after receiving a tip, and both officers were gunned down. The shooter was taken into custody several hours later.
The District 11 seat is currently held by Matt Watson. Watson will be running for EBR Mayor-President which leaves his seat up for grabs.
Here is Bargas’ full statement:
First I would like to express my sorrow and condolences to the BRPD family. I would also like to thank all first responders, and medical personnel, for dealing with Covid-19. In addition, prayers for those with, and who have not survived from, Covid-19.
I’m certain that there will be some who question the timeliness of this announcement. Some will say that there are other more important things going on and such.
I need to plant this seed now, so everyone can take baby steps in preparation.
I am announcing my candidacy for the East Baton Rouge Metro Council District 11 seat in 2020.
This seat is currently held by Matt Watson. Matt has done an outstanding job, and even though I have some big shoes to fill, I believe that I am most qualified for the position.
The latest event with BRPD confirmed to me that we, as a community, need leadership that supports law enforcement.
There will be more information on this in the near future. Please like, place a friend request, and share.
Thank you again for your support.
